Amin Hannan Chowdhury is a name that has rapidly become synonymous with stand up comedy in Bangladesh. Amin has single handedly changed the landscape of the comedy scene by starting from ground zero at Naveed’s Comedy Club to producing the first ever comedy special from Bangladesh. A tale that speaks of perseverance, creativity, and guts to foot it in unexplored territory in culture that primarily does not maintain stand up comedy as an art form.
Early Life and Journey into Comedy

Amin began trying his hand at comedy by performing in Dhaka’s not so still up and rising stand up scene. Over time, he found his ground at Naveed’s Comedy Club (NCC), a 100 sq ft room in Gulshan which he fondly calls “home.” This little, intimate venue gave Amin the opportunity to try out his style and connect with a live audience. With time, his stage grew broader, audience got larger, and the jokes became sharper.
His jokes “got worse,” according to Amin; but considering the self deprecating humor at displays, one can see the determination of the man to improve. For Amin, every performance is an opportunity to rewrite, refine, and perfect his material. An aspiring stand up comedian like him believes that practice makes one stable.
A Revolutionary Milestone: ‘One Night Stand’

Amin made history by releasing One Night Stand on July 20, 2023, as the first Bangladeshi stand up comedy special on the OTT platform Chorki. The performance lasted an hour and pointed the way for the genre’s address in the country. Using observational and narrative storytelling, the special drew from Amin’s childhood, his influencer status, and the special challenges of being a comedian in Bangladesh.
Amin’s style of humor is unorthodox yet relatable. He has a good eye for societal incongruity, and his presenting such in the first person makes his exaggeration believable and funny. Whether he is joking about his childhood antics or how does he try to join the audiences, most of Amin’s humor is accessible to a wide range of viewers.
No, the special had its challenges, not the least of which was translating the energy of a live crowd into a recording. “Crowd work is meant for live shows,” said Amin, while pointing out that this aspect of the emotion gets the entire comedy universe when recorded. Nevertheless, One Night Stand carries its weight with audiences; it did so mostly because of Amin’s drolling ability and inborn charisma.
The special ended with a further Q&A, whose moderator was Ahmed Ashik. It put an even more interactive spin on the special. The presence of noteworthy influencers in the audience further added to the show.
Amir Hannan's Influence And Impact

Amin has undoubtedly created a huge vacuum in the area of comedy in Bangladesh. Before him, the stand up comedy scene was limited to a small, private venue, the NCC. With One Night Stand on a mainstream platform, he took this art form to a larger audience. He proved his mettle to show that Bangladeshi comedians could have a large platform like others and encourage them to do the same.
Amin has been speaking on things related to the Bangladeshi comedians’ struggles easily comparable with the Indian ones. While some disingenuous critics try to label local comedians as “not funny like Indian comedians,” Amin takes such jabs with a healthy smile. Indeed, he has made such criticism fodder for much of his wit. His power to absorb and reinvent such criticism into humor is definitely one of the much applauded skills that comprise an excellent comedian.
International Recognition and Another Comedy Special

May 2024 will forever be remembered as Amin’s debut continental tour in Australia for inspiring and selling out shows at Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney venues. It was a landmark event in the global baptism of Bangla language stand-up comedy.
I could end the tour broke but the happiest person around, Amin recalled. It brought people to communicate with Non-Resident Bangladeshis (NRB) about how Bangladeshi comedians could travel to a wider international audience by opening their scope.
Amin shot his second comedy special, Chalaan, during this tour. It premiered on YouTube on December 20, 2024, and included his performances from shows in Australia. Despite production misfortune, such as diverse backdrops with inconsistent visual qualities from various places, Chalaan was well embraced, providing yet another stronghold for Amin as a visionary.
The Viral Prank on Virat Kohli

Amin is also famous beyond the stage. He staged a prank in April 2023 with Puma India targeting Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli. Disguised as a bothersome photographer, Amin forced Kohli into awkward postures, including holding a bucket of ice. The prank ended with Kohli himself saying that he was in on the joke and flipping the script on Puma.
This not only displayed Amin’s diversity but also brought out his talents in dealing with international audiences and personalities.
Challenges and Future Aspirations

Comedy in Bangladesh is rife with contradictions. Much of it has saddle it with factors like culture, limited venues, audience expectations, and sometimes all of these make it very difficult for a comedian to continue to survive with his work. Amin went through the process of all those criticisms as well. Many said he was not really funny enough or just not loud enough.
But he’s not detoured. Every stage time for Amin is an opportunity to improve, and every critique leads him toward insights for growth. Looking forward, he aims to reach more, even performing in Hindi for South Asian audiences.
Amin's Legacy

He is so much to the people that he has changed the concept of being a comedian in Bangladesh. He rather has his pioneering comedy specials and international tours, Amin has set a new benchmark of stand up comedy in the country.
His journey truly represents the power of perseverance and creativity. Be it a small club in Dhaka or a sold-out theater in Australia, Amin turns to his task, proving that laughter is a boundless commodity.
Him being the pioneer from Bangladesh’s first-ever comedy scene development would be remembered by future generations: Amin Hannan Chowdhury, the trendsetter.
